Science and Cocktails is an amazing organisation that attracts the general public to attend scientific presentations by experts of their field. I give such talks regularly, but I must say that Science and Cocktails is outstanding by the quality of the organisation, the wonderful auditorium where it happens, and the big audience. It was for me a unique experience that I immensely enjoyed.

My Science and Cocktails talk was among the most enjoyable and memorable engagements of my career as a scientist and science communicator. Science and Cocktails events are a unique and delightful opportunity for professional scientists and lay audiences to come together to celebrate the profound ideas and the whimsical fun of scientific inquiry. I also very much enjoyed speaking to (and with) Danish high school students in a “Science and Mocktails” event in Copenhagen. The students’ insightful questions demonstrated their interest and excitement about AI and the many philosophical and social issues surrounding the AI revolution. I truly appreciate the opportunity the Science and Cocktails Foundation provided to share and discuss science with young students.

I give lectures at high profile public and corporate events worldwide, including Ted and Davos, but speaking at Science & Cocktails was a truly memorable and unique experience. The remarkable combination of a cocktail hour with a rock concert, culminating in the highlight of the evening being a lecture on science, is a powerful and creative formula for inspiring the public in the wonders and critical importance of science. The atmosphere is one of warmth, creativity, and exuberant enthusiasm reflected in an audience which is remarkably engaged, curious and appreciative. Science & Cocktails is a wonderful recipe that should be copied worldwide!

My talk at the Science and Cocktails event was possibly the most enjoyable public lecture I have ever given. The Science and Cocktails organisation made my experience easy and comfortable from arranging my hotel to providing transport to and from the Christiania venue. Then, the technical provision for the talk itself was faultless: everything worked seamlessly from the presentation of the slides, the microphones and the large stage. The musical performance prior to my talk had been well received and the crowd was a delight to present to and then to talk to afterwards. The Science and Cocktails crew make this all look easy but it takes careful planning and commitment to make it work on the night. These public events must surely generate discussion in the local community about science and scientific ideas well beyond attendance at the public event. Earlier that day I had spoken at a local high school as part of the Science and Mocktails event. These events are important in exposing young minds to science and scientists in a way that the schools themselves often cannot provide. They also provide important role models for students who might not have previously thought of science as something they could do.

This was simply the best science communication experience of my life, with informal but smooth organisation, a friendly audience, and the awesome setting of DR Koncerthuset. The sum of those offers a fantastically creative stimulation, which helped me express my knowledge in new ways, but also gave me ideas and motivation for new science. Visiting the High School was a perfect prelude for my Science and Cocktails event at the DR Koncerthuset. The teachers were great hosts, and students were excited, engaged, and asked stimulating questions. It was rewarding to see how relevant my research can be to their world and their futures.

Science and Cocktails is a unique event that combines discussion of top-level scientific issues and popular participation. It breaks the barrier between scientific jargon and real life. It enables many people to get in touch with what is being studied in disciplines ranging from medical science to philosophy, to understand it better, and probably for many younger people, to decide to study it themselves.

I was deeply impressed by Science & Cocktails, the relaxed atmosphere, the music, the venue, and the extraordinary and diverse audience it attracts. Discussing the secrets of gravity with over a thousand people on a Saturday night, in such an engaging environment, and seeing people's scientific curiosity and creativity fully engaged, all while enjoying music and cocktails and eagerly exploring the mysteries of the universe, was humbling but also incredibly fun and exciting, showing that deeply science is indeed both fun and exciting but also accessible to all. It is events like these that truly play the most critical role in building meaningful connections between science and society and making people feel genuinely engaged with science and excited with the questions being explored. I wish this could be exported to many other cities.

Science and Cocktails creates a rare and wonderful atmosphere in which serious scientific ideas become part of a lively cultural experience. The event I participated in Copenhagen was exceptionally well organized. The combination of live music and an enthusiastic, engaged audience made them among the most enjoyable public lectures I have ever given. Even my jokes received a generous reception.

Science and Cocktails was an amazing event to participate in. Such an enthusiastic and intelligent audience, with a real buzz around the room. It was incredibly rewarding to see so many people genuinely interested in science. Well done to everyone at Science and Cocktails for creating such a fantastic event!

I’ve given public lectures and spoken at science festivals all around the world and the entire Science and Cocktails experience stands out as exceptional for a few reasons—many of which have to do with accessibility and audience. First of all, I love the fact that there was a parallel program. Science and Mocktails. for high school students. Being able to reach that audience in this way is unusual and powerful. If only I’d had a program like this as a high school student. Can you imagine?

Second, the main event, Science and Cocktails: what a marvelous crowd, venue, and vibe. We simply don’t have anything like this in the United States, and it’s a dreadful shame because as you can easily see from reading the news, we desperately need enthusiasm for and literacy about science on the part of the general public. Science and Cocktails has a much more relaxed, fun, cool vibe than the other science festivals I’ve participated in, and this has the consequence of bringing out a diverse age range not usually seen at these events. Such events in the US, in addition to being much smaller and less ambitious, draw heavily on a combination of college-aged students (often required to go for one of their classes, I expect), and people at around retirement age who seek intellectual stimulation and community. What is missed, of course, are the 20- and 30-somethings who were so abundantly present at the Science and Cocktails event.

Finally, I’ve never had my own opening band. That was definitely a first.

I had an absolute blast speaking at "Science & Cocktails". The audience was very engaged, the questions were thoughtful, and the cocktails sublime. The entire event was superbly organized, and I was treated very well by the organizers throughout the event. I have recommended this series to many of my colleagues!
