A World of Mathematics
The roof of the Tycho Brahe Planetarium and the mathematical model of the planetary system has the elliptical shape in common and the spiral curve in a twining plant is found again in the spiral staircase in Rundetårn and in the DNA molecules.
A geometrical, fractal-like view of the world will be given by Vagn Lundsgaard Hansen. A tour through the history of mathematics and its appearance in Nature. A tour through the abstract thought, the weirdness of reality and the platonic world.
And while some focus on what they can see, others focus on what they can hear:
Deep in the inner ear labyrinth of the spiral-shaped cochlea is present thousands of microscopic hair cells. Jacob Kirkegaard, will present his work Labyrinthitis which involves the audience in an interactive concert where their own ears respond to the tones that are played out through the speakers. The room will turn into one big resonant labyrinth of sound.
Vagn Lundsgaard Hansen
Mathematician and author. Professor of mathematics at the Technical University of Denmark. He is fascinated by the interaction between the abstract and the concrete in mathematics, and by finding serious mathematics in the description and explanation of phenomena from the real world. His research papers are in the areas of topology, geometry, and global analysis.
Jacob Kirkegaard is a Danish sound artist who focuses on scientific and aesthetic aspects of resonance, time and sound. His installations, compositions and performances deal with space and phenomena which are normally inaccessible. With unorthodox recording equipment (hydrophones, accelerometer, home-built electromagnetic receivers) Kirkegaard captures novel sounds from a wealth of surprising places such as a geyser, a sandbar, a nuclear power station, an empty space, a TV tower and even from the human ear's interior.
