Inside Your Inner Voice

Science & Cocktails is proud to present a unique evening with neuroscientist superstar Ethan Kross and acclaimed author of many books including Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, who will take you deep into your own inner voice. Prepare yourself for a journey into your inner world, with a cocktail in your hand, and while you listen to Palmer & Rumklang playing ambient surf and groovy organs.
Why do we talk to ourselves, and what did this inner voice evolve to do for us? What happens in the mind and body when the inner voice turns into “chatter,” and why is that so costly for health, relationships and performance? Can small changes in how we talk to ourselves change how we handle stress? What do the experiments show? Why does venting to friends often make things worse, and what kind of support actually helps?
Everyone has a voice inside their head. It helps us plan, remember, rehearse and make sense of our lives, and it is one of the most remarkable tools evolution has given us. But that same voice can turn against us, trapping us in loops of worry, rumination and self-criticism that damage our health, relationships and performance.
In this talk, psychologist, neuroscientist, and international bestselling author Ethan Kross draws on more than 25 years of research to explain what the inner voice is, why we have it, and how it goes wrong. He then lays out the evidence for a practical science-based toolkit for managing it: techniques we can use on our own, ways our relationships can help or hurt, and surprising features of our physical surroundings that quiet the mind. Grounded in research and real-world cases, the talk offers a science of mental fitness anyone can put to work.
Before the talk, Palmer & Rumklang will be playing something that sounds like an erotic themed movie from 1973, welcoming you to Palmtrees and Reverb.
Event held in English. This event has the generous support of The Lundbeck Foundation and The Brain Prize.
